Facebook Supportless NavigatorWelcome All our Maine Coons are registered with the Fancier Cat Association (CFA), our babies are guaranteed. About Maine Coons One of the oldest natural races in North America, the Maine Coon is usually considered a native of the state of Maine (in fact, the Maine Coon is the official cat of the state of Maine). Several attractive legends surround their origin. A widespread (although biologically impossible) belief is that it originated from pairings between semi-living, domestic and raccoon cats. This myth, reinforced by the tail of the shrubs and the most common coloration (a brown tabby of raccoon) led to the adoption of the name 'Maine Coon.' (Originally only brown tabbies were called 'Maine Coon Cats;' cats of other colors were called 'Maine Shags.') Another popular theory is that the Maine emerged from the six cats Marie Antoinette sent to Wiscasset, Maine when she planned to escape from France during the French Revolution. Most breeders today believe that the breed originated in pairings between pre-existing domestic cats and foreign longhairs (perhaps Angora types introduced by the sailors of New England, or longhairs brought to America by the Vikings). First recorded in the cat literature in 1861 with a mention of a black and white cat called 'Captain Jenks of the Marine Horses,' Maine Coons were popular competitors in the first cat shows in Boston and New York. A brunette tabby called 'Cosie' won the Best Cat at 1895 Madison Square Garden Show. Unfortunately, its popularity as cats of shows was reduced with the arrival in 1900 of the most Flemish Persians. Although the Maine Coon remained a favorite cat in New England, the race did not begin to recover its old widespread popularity until the 1950s when more and more cat fans began to realize them, show them, and record their pedigrees. In 1968, six breeders formed the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association (MCBFA) to preserve and protect the race. Today, MCBFA membership has more than 1000 fans and 200 breeders. In 1980, all the records had recognized the Coon of Maine, and it was well on the way to regain its old glory. Maine Coons were well established more than a century ago as a hard and handsome domestic cat race, well equipped to survive the hostile winters of New England. Nature is not soft-hearted. Select the greatest, the brightest, the best fighters, and the best hunters to reproduce successive generations. Maine Coons' planned babies are relatively recent. Since the planned breeding began, Maine Coon breeders have sought to preserve the "natural" qualities of Maine Coon. The ideal Maine Coon is a strong and healthy cat. Features All about the Coon Maine points to its adaptation to a harsh climate. Its shiny, heavy and waterproof coat, is like that of any other race, and should feel appreciated. It is longer in oxide, stomach and torches to protect against snow and snow, and shorter in the back and neck to protect against buzzing on the brush. The coat falls softly, and is almost maintenance free: a weekly hairstyle is all that is usually required to keep it in the maximum condition. The long and arbustible tail that the cat wraps around itself when it curls to sleep can protect it from cold winters. Their ears are more strongly peeled (both inside and on the tips) than many breeds for the protection of the cold, and have a great variety of movement. Large, round and sleeveless feet serve as snow shoes. Their big eyes and ears are also survival traits, serving as the view and hearing increase. The relatively long, square nozzle facilitates the catching of dams and the water supply of streams and ponds. Although the Yankee myth of 30-pound cats is only that, a myth (unless the cat is grossly overweight!), these are indeed high cats, musculosis, big-boned; males commonly reach 15 to 20 lbs, with females weighing about 10 to 15 lbs. Add to that two or three inches winter coat, and people will swear they're looking at a big cat. Maine Coons develop slowly, and do not reach their full size until they are three to five years old. Their provisions remain varnish throughout their lives; they are great, soft and of good character. Even their voices depart from other cats; they have a distinctive and chirping trill that they use for everything, from cutting down their people to play with them. (Maine Coons loves to play, and many will happily recover small items.) They seldom tease, and when they do, that soft and small voice doesn't fit in their size! Temperature While Maine The cocoons are highly people-oriented cats, they are not too dependent. They don't bother you constantly for attention, but they prefer to "go" with their owners, investigating any activity you're involved in and "help" when they can. They are not, as a general rule, known as "tail ducks" but as with any personality trait there are a few Maine Coons who prefer turns. Most Maine The cocoons will be near, probably occupying the chair next to yours. Maines will follow you from room to room and wait outside a closed door for you to leave. A Maine Coon will be your partner, your friend, your friend, but almost never your baby. Maine Coons are relaxed and easy to carry in almost everything they do. Males tend to be clowns while females retain more dignity, but both remain playful throughout their lives. They usually get along with kids and dogs, as well as other cats. They are not as vertically oriented as some other races, preferring to chase objects on the ground and grab them on their big legs - no doubt the instincts developed as professional mice. Many Maine The buds will play "fetch" with their owners.
